Summer of '65

When I saw the trailer above for Moonrise Kingdom I wasn't that interested in the film but the dress that Suzy wears  made me pause and re-watch it several times. To be honest, I'm not a Wes Anderson fan so I won't be going to see the movie. It looks aesthtically pleasing but the self-conscious quirkiness of his films don't appeal to me. I love the dress though and am determined to make my own version.

I think the orange version may actually be tiny orange and white checks
She has the same design in different colours. I think I like the orange version best.
I would guess that the dress has no waist seam. It looks like she's got a piece of string or something tied around her waist.

Yellow

This one looks like some sort of textured pique type fabric

I bought this pattern off trademe because it has the right shape, although it's got princess seams which I don't think Suzy's dress does. I will have to re-draft the collar and draft some longer sleeves and cuffs. I'll leave the faux pockets and the stripe off the front and change the zip to the back (the zip is covered by the white stripe).

I have this medium weight orange cotton that I bought at Arthur Toye in Wellington. The fabric is called Mary Quant which is pretty perfect for making a 60s style dress. If this one goes well I might have to make a yellow one and a pink one too.

I'm sure you'll do an amazing work!!I'm a big fan of your style and of Wes Anderson's aesthetic and this film seems so adorable that I've already added a white collar to a vintage yellow dress, can't wait to see your version!!

  3. I can't wait to see your dresses and I love the colour and of course who could resist with that famous name!
I have to say though, that movie looks right up my street. I don't know if I know any of his other movies but I do like the look of this. Thanks because I would probably never have heard about it!

    1. I'm glad that it looks like your sort of film. His other movies include the Darjeeling Ltd, Bottle Rocket, the Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr Fox and some others I can't remember.

  5. May that movie launch a thousand dresses like Suzy's! This all looks very promising, I can't wait to see it. I tend to approach Wes films with an open mind and end up liking each one for different reasons, but it's hard to tell sometimes if it's just the look of everything. Or that I just wish Angelica Houston was my mama.

    1. It probably will which will be fabulous. His films are usually very pretty but I'm more a substance over style type and I just don't really relate to them. I mostly watch musicals and sci-fi so maybe they're just not to my taste. Angelica Houston is great. I loved her in The Witches.

  7. I'm a big Wes Anderson fan, I've lost count of the number of times I've watched the Darjeeling Limited! That fabric is gorgeous and the pattern is just like Suzy's. Can't wait to see the finished frock! x

    1. Many people are huge fans. I think he's just not to my taste although they are always visually pleasing. The fabric is great. I regret not buying the other colours they had.

  9. It sort of looks like there's an empire-waist seam on the pink one...? I might just be seeing things though. I agree that the "waist" on the orange isn't a seam, though, probably.

I love it, though! I usually go out of my way to ignore Wes Anderson too so I probably wouldn't have seen it, thanks for bringing it into my field of vision :)

    1. I thought that too but after zooming in on it I think it may just be a crease but it's hard to tell.
That's good. I probably would have remained blissfully ignorant of it too if I hadn't seen the trailer on someone else's blog (I can't remember whose).

    2. Okay, I was looking back at this post and I'm pretty sure I'm going to copy you hardcore and also make this dress. Probably not for a while, since I just got unnecessarily ambitious about a sewalong, but uh, just so you know, you're inspiring sewing projects on the other side of the globe.

  14. I understand that Wes Anderson isn't everybody's cup of tea and, though this film has a lot of his trademark aesthetic, I have to say that I found it to be the most tender, the most personal, and the most moving of any of his films. I hope you'll give it a chance when it comes on DVD.

After all, any movie that gave you the inspiration for your amazing dress can't be all that bad, can it now? Lovely job translating Suzy's dress. I never realized that her dress had texture to it. I like yours with the black tights -- so mod!!!
