Op shopping has been pretty rubbish lately, or maybe I'm just becoming more discerning as it's becoming more expensive. I'm shocked by some of the outrageous prices I've seen in the last few months; $12 for a faded and stained 60s hat, $50 for a matted faux fur jacket, $2 for a zip (I can buy them new for less than that), $30 for a typical '80s dress that you could find a dozen of at any op shop. These aren't fancy, clean charity shops like I saw when I was in England, these are musty, junky op shops. Don't get me wrong, junky ones are my favourite kind of op shop, but the reason I love them is because of the thrill of finding a bargain hidden under all the rubbish. Anyway, enough of my complaining, here's some relatively cheap stuff I op shopped recently.
This blue pom pom hat is cute and it only cost $1.
This '60s sewing pattern also cost $1. The lady on the front has been partially beheaded, but is still keeping it classy with her gloves and handbag.
I know, I know, it's another blue hat. I was actually going to sell this at the vintage fair, but then I tried it on and really liked it. It was $2.
Love the bag...it's gorgeous!! Looks in perfect condition too. I hope you have a marvellous week doll xx
ReplyDeleteYes, the bag is in really good condition. You have a great week too.
DeleteWho needs a head when you have class and gloves!
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you say about op shops lately... so overpriced and unrealistic. Someone must buy stuff tho. How did you go at the markets. Sounds like fun. Oh to fill you in, I got my friend's Mum a voucher for the berry place (can't remember the name) and they go on Wednesday... the most amazing part is that it is only 4 klms from her house (I didn't know where she lived when I booked it)!! How great was that. The casino one looked nice and was cheaper but I just couldn't bring myself to pay a casino any money! Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteWell, that's what I don't get, people aren't actually buying the expensive stuff because it sits there for months and doesn't sell. The market was good, thanks. I'm doing another one on the 25th. I'm so glad you managed to sort it. Sweethearts at Berryfields is lovely. I'm sure they'll have a great time. I know what you mean about the casino. I wouldn't want to give them my money either.
DeleteThe sewing pattern! I really love old sewing patterns. What great finds, the pompom hat is too cute! xx
ReplyDeleteI love old sewing patterns too. I have way too many.
DeleteI love both of your hats, especially the pompom one. And of course I can't resist vintage bags either. Some op shops here are charging far too much for anything considered slightly vintage too. But I do still seem to find some hidden gems, usually when I'm just about to give up trying! Xx
ReplyDeleteWho can resist a vintage bag. I guess jacking up the price for anything vaguely vintage or retro is happening everywhere.
DeleteI love the pompom hat and the bag!! Here is so hard to find vintage patterns and I'd love to start my own collection sooner or later, the one you bought is lovely, I adore the jacket!

Thanks. Vintage patterns are quite hard to find in the op shops here too. I mostly get mine online.
DeleteLove the pattern, the pom pom hat and the bag. You've chosen well despite the prices. x
ReplyDeleteThanks! There is still some reasonably priced stuff out there, it's just about finding it.
DeleteThat pom pom hat is cute! I've been trying to knot something similar to that but have had a hard time making something I like. I've noticed that some of the more popular thrift stores have raised their prices. I still find deals but it's a bummer that they raise their prices.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I have made pom poms before but it was so long ago I can't remember how you do it. I guess the rising prices are happening everywhere.
DeleteGreat hats, gorgeous bag, and that pattern (despite the beheading) is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThe prices here are so variable, there is no consistency, even within one shop, and lots of vintage stuff is really over-priced for stuff that isn't that nice. Interestingly, it doesn't sell either and the shops have to knock the prices down - so what does that tell us? Sadly, it doesn't seem to be telling the folk who do the pricing anything at all! xxxx
Thanks! Yes, it's the same here. I think that the people that volunteer at the op shops really have no idea about pricing. I recently went into one op shop three times over about a month and a half and they still had the same stuff sitting there.
Deleteoh good finds, especially that handbag - too gorgeous. I worry about the future of op shops though since people these days buy such crappy clothes there won't be anything worth donating or buying from op shops in the future. And it must be difficult for the op shops to price their garments given that clothes can be bought so cheaply these days brand new. I've pretty much given up on op shopping here in Sydney sadly
ReplyDeleteMe too. I've talked with various people about how there won't be anything left to op shop soon because cheaply made, mass produced garments won't last long enough to make it to the op shop. That's no good. Sometimes I feel like giving up but then I find something amazing and get pulled back in.
Deletestupid shops, when they cotton on to vintageness, they start hiking their prices up, even for useless tat. Looks like you still found some great stuff, both the hats are great, the first one especially! The beheaded lady pattern looks great, have you made a suit yet? x
ReplyDeleteYes, it's so trendy that they think they can call anything 'vintage' and charge the earth for it. I've never made a suit before, but I'm working on one at the moment. I'm thinking of using the skirt from the pattern above because I don't like the skirt that goes with the jacket pattern I'm using.
Deletei've gotten pretty discerning with my opshopping recently too, not just because things are getting more expensive but also largely because i have so much stuff it's become easier to stick to only buying the things i really like and know i'll wear instead of a bunch of things i'm not sure about that i wear once or twice and then never again.
