A wee bit Givenchy

I've finished my exams, and yesterday I went op shopping to celebrate. I found some badass 1970s platforms and a (sort of) designer hat. Things that were said to me while I was op shopping included, "You remind me of my mother. She had a coat just like that." and "You remind me of me when I was a little girl. We wore coats like that and ribbons in our hair like that." I was wearing a 50s dress and coat, and had a scarf in my hair. It's quite funny how people either think I dress like a little girl or an old lady.

70s platforms are one of those things that I know existed, but I had never found a pair in an op shop. I'm not sure why because I find 70s dresses and homewares everywhere. Maybe people just wore them to death and then threw them away.

They make me so tall. And by 'so tall' I mean like average height.

They were made in NZ and have old style leather soles. The heel is about 11 centimetres but they are surprisingly comfortable because of the platform.

PLATFORM SHOES

For your amusement, here's a funny video I found from 1977 about the health hazards associated with wearing platform shoes. I can't get it to embed properly but if you click on the picture it will take you to the site where you can watch it.

When I was looking at the hats the lady at the op shop showed me this one.  It's made of lovely green velvet.

And when I looked inside, I saw that it was, "An Adaptation of Hubert de Givenchy Paris". I don't normally get excited about designer labels, but Givenchy designed some pretty iconic costumes for Audrey Hepburn films in the 60s. I'm assuming that 'an adaptation' means that it was made by Reggi of Wilshire under some sort of licensing agreement with Givenchy.

Now, I'm off to read the two hundred-odd items that have managed to pile up in my google reader while I've been busy studying and sitting exams.

  1. Well done on finishing your exams, that must be a huge relief!
Those shoes are to die for, in fact I think I would die if I spotted anything that fab in a charity shop. Insanely jealous. x

  3. Oh my god, these finds trump anything I've seen lately. I am obscenely envious! If you ever get sick of those shoes I would gladly take them off your hands!

Being off school has been good for my Google Reader too, I'm down to 362 items and it's the first time in months mine hasn't been 1000+. Do you have any new blogs you've discovered recently? I feel like it's ages since I found a new one.

    1. I doubt I'll ever get sick of them but if I do, I promise you'll be the first to know. Your recent finds have been pretty amazing too.

It weirdly stresses me out a bit if I have too many unread items. I just started reading allthishappiness.blogspot.com and maryvannote.com. I don't know if you've heard of or read either of those. I'm bad at discovering new blogs.

  4. Congratulations on getting the exams out of the way, that must be a relief? Those shoes are great, I have seen shoes like that around the UK but they are always too small for me, I can't wait to see what you pair them with. Xx

    1. Thanks. It is a relief. Yeah, vintage shoes seem to come in quite small sizes unfortunately.

  5. I love those shoes. What a find! I'd have snapped them up in a second and put them on a shelf just to look at them if they didn't fit me! :)

    1. Thanks! Luckily they fit me, but I have a couple of pairs of 40s shoes that are too small that I keep on a shelf in my sewing room because they're so pretty.

  8. Yay for exams being over....I hope you did well. Those shoes are gorgeous, although I don't think I could walk far in them. I bought a similar hat this week too....it's a furry green one, looks like a green cat is sitting on my head! I'm sure yours looks way more stylish! Xx

    1. Thanks, I hope so too. They are quite comfortable because of the platform but I probably couldn't walk around all day in them. Ha ha, I have a hat that someone said looks like a cat sitting on my head too.

  11. I love your shoes... and red my favourite! I remember them in the '70's. I was too young to wear them (cough) but lurved them! Isn't it great to be on holidays - I finished last Thursday - hope you went well!

  13. Now that you mentioned it, it is very difficult to find 70's platforms in thrift shops. Rarely you see any of them even though there is plenty of other 70's stuff available. That is too bad because they would work nicely with 40's style aswell.
Thankfully you were able to find those gorgeous red platforms! And that green turban is awesome and rare find too :D
PS. Congrats on finishing your exams, I wish I could take some holiday aswell :D

    1. Yeah, it's a shame that they're so hard to find. I'm not sure why it is though. Thanks. Yes, one good thing about studying is the amount of holidays.

  17. My eyes went BOING (like a cartoon character) when I saw the Hubert de Givenchy green velvet hat. Its predecessor (unfortunately named "The Spring Hat for Mature Ladies") can be seen at the Vintage Pattern Lending Library 1912 Project site. VPLL is hosting a 1912 sewing project - encouraging volunteers to reproduce La Mode Illustree patterns. During my bit of volunteering, I experimented with a mini-reproduction of the hat, but couldn't imagine it being lovely... but this Givenchy hat certainly is.

It's almost as if somehow the concept of the horizontal gathers and Edwardian hat shape (by an unknown milliner) became reconfigured and birthed the more recent vintage Givenchy hat. A great example of trend reemergence.
