Daisy Chain

I have a confession. Since I made this dress about four months ago I haven't worn it once, until yesterday. Why? Because I accidentally made it too short. And by 'too short' I mean too short for me. I love the look of short dresses...on other people, but I haven't worn one in ages and I feel uncomfortable in it. It's not that short. I mean, it covers my arse but I can't reach my arms above my head without it riding up a bit too high.

The fabric also has all these little holes in it and I stupidly didn't line the dress because I'm too lazy. In the picture I'm wearing a white slip underneath it but I got a bit paranoid that it was going to ride up while I was walking around. I could go back and line it but I already bound the neckline, sleeves and hem with bias binding and I can't be bothered unpicking it.

The daisies are printed on the fabric but from far away they look like embroidery

I've made the pattern before. It's Burdastyle #104, a wedding dress pattern (ha!). I made this one shorter because I was going to use bias binding instead of hemming it. I accidentally cut off too much of then hem though.

The stupid pose was so you could see the bell sleeves better

I went to all the trouble of doing french seams and making the insides really neat and I like the shape so I'm just going to make myself wear it. Hopefully once I get used to wearing a shorter dress than I usually do I'll feel comfortable wearing it.

  1. Aw I think the length looks perfect! I used to wear tiny little 60s minidresses all the time but now I am more of a knee-length 50s kind of girl so I understand your length-related woes. I love this pattern, the shape is awesome and I love the bell sleeves. You are totally my sewing inspiration, I swear with every post I get more envious of your skills and the amazing things that come from them.

    1. Same, I wore shorter skirts than this when I was younger but almost everything I own now is knee length or longer. It's a great pattern. I plan on making the pattern again with some black lace. Thanks! You're too kind.

  2. wow, its totally cool! It looks fab with stockings. You have great legs for this style! (Lucky you!) I can relate to the "being too lazy to line it ordeal"! A slip underneath works a treat though. A wedding dress pattern - who would have thought ha? Simplicity at its best! Go girl x

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I hate lining because it's like making the whole thing twice. I usually wear a slip anyway so lining seems really pointless. I notice that no one who has made it on burdastyle has sewn it as a wedding dress though. Maybe it's a bit too casual?

  3. I really love it and I think you can pull it off easily - whenever I think something is too short I just wear opaque tights;)

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I plan to wear it with opaque tights only too and maybe I'll make myself some little bloomers to wear under it like they did in the 60s.

  5. This is just gorgeous on you! I really love it. You know you could put a block of black around the bottom (I had to squint to see if you hadn't done that already - can't find my glasses!). It doesn't look too short and you have the pins for it so go forth in mini I say!

    1. Thanks! I did bind the bottom with some black bias binding rather than doing a hem. That's a good idea though. If a find that I don't really wear it, I may have to do that. Thanks.

  7. The length is great for this style of dress. So mod! Think of it as a chance to show off all of your fun tights. :) I really thought those daisies were embroidered until you said otherwise. My eye was fooled!

    1. The length is spot on for this style and if I saw it on someone else I probably wouldn't think it was too short but I'm just used to wearing longer dresses. I do have a lot of coloured tights. I love the fabric, it's like an optical illusion.

  9. With legs like that I don't see what all the fuss is about!
Ok, Ok, I know when you usually wear a certain length that anything shorter (or longer) seems odd but you honestly can pull this one off hon!

    1. Thanks! It's not really my legs I worry about but rather flashing my butt at everyone.

  10. Wow, that fabric is so awesome! I definitely thought it was embroidered from the full-body pictures. Don't worry, it doesn't look too short to me; plus it'd be a shame never to wear such a cute dress!

    1. I thought it was embroidered too when I spied it in the fabric shop. That's why I'm just going to make myself wear it until I am comfortable in it because it would be a shame not to.

  13. It looks really pretty, just wear it with tights or seventies style with slacks/ jeans/ trousers. And if you're really worried about the see throughness make up the same pattern in voile (perhaps without the sleeves) and wear the voile one inside like a petticoat (you could even use a contrast colour for a really cool effect). I wear fairly short dresses/ skirts on my scooter with silk pyjama shorts inside. Haven't had/ caused an accident yet XD Best of luck.

    1. Thanks! Yeah, I did consider making a black version to wear underneath but it seemed like too much work. I think I will make some bloomers though.

  14. This dress is absolutely gorgeous! I personally think the length is great, but I tend to wear similar length dresses with tights, leggings or over trousers. I love this dress just as it is though!

    1. Thanks! I will definitely be wearing it with tights but strangely I don't really own any leggings or trousers. I think it will just take a bit of getting used to.

  15. Whoaaa, how did I miss this before? I love it! You look phenomenal!

I hear you about the length thing--I've spent the past couple years gradually dropping all my hemlines to knee- or below-knee length. I've tried a couple miniskirts and -dresses lately, and I think my preference for them is coming back a little, but I still feel so naked wandering the streets with so much bare leg! It's a matter of reacclimating ourselves, I guess?

    1. Thanks! Yes, I'm exactly the same. It's not because the dress is actually too short but rather I'm just not used to wearing things that short. It just takes some getting used to.
