Atlas

Thanks for all your comments on my last post. I appreciate every single one of them. Where I live most people just think I dress weirdly (which I do!) so it's nice to know that other people like the clothes I make.

Simplicity 5179 from 1972

When I saw Georgia's map dress I added 'dress with map print' to my very long list of things to sew. I found some world map print quilting cotton that reminded me of the globe we had when I was a kid.

I used a shirtdress (shirt dress?) pattern from 1972 which I found in an op shop for 20 cents. Speaking of op shopping, I haven't shared any of my finds lately because there haven't really been any. The op shopping here hasn't been very good in the last couple of months. All I seem to find are sewing notions which are useful but not very exciting. I did get the bag I'm holding the other day and some bias binding but that's about it.

I made view 4, the blue spotty dress, but without the contrast cuffs and collar. It had this weird bit on the skirt where there was a little flap with two buttons. I cut the flap off and did buttons all down the front instead. The red buttons were from the Two Squirrels' Nest.

I look pretty grumpy in the photos because I was trying not to squint in the sun but I'm really happy with how this dress turned out. I think I could make a whole pile of these shirtdresses and live in them.

  2. Aww man, I'm so glad my dress inspired your dress! I love this shirtdress (yeah... shirt dress?!) style so much so I can understand your desire to live in them. Also I finally ordered some Goldenponies t-bars (boring black ones) and looking at yours is making me wish they'd arrive now. I wonder why the opshopping in Chch has suddenly got so lackluster? The only places I've had any luck lately are New Plymouth and Vietnam.

    1. I looked up shirtdress vs shirt dress and I think both are right. It's funny the other day I was just saying to someone I should've got the black t-bars because I have no plain black shoes. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. Sometimes I go through phases of having bad op shop luck. Vietnam op shopping? You'll have to share pictures of those finds. I love seeing photos of other people's op shopping loot.

  9. Yeh, this is a really great looking pattern, could be so versatile (change around the sleeves etc)... I am yet to find one that just fits right! Love the fabric!

Op shopping has been pretty gloomy for me too, just a few daggy patterns and hardly any fabric. Everyone has cottoned on to how great handmade/diy sewing is!

    1. Yeah, it's a good basic pattern. I want to make loads with different skirts and things.
I know, it's always been quite hard to find fabric in the op shops here but the clothes have always been good. In the last couple of years it seems to have gotten really popular and everything gets picked over.

  15. great dress, have just discovered your blog and love all the dresses you have been sewing. I sew lots for my small people from vintage patterns but have never been brave enough to sew vintage patterns for myself.
