Thanks for all your thoughtful comments on my last post. I enjoyed reading them.
I haven't been sewing much lately. Uni is hectic. I have essays, exams and a dissertation. While I don't have time to sew, I have still been thinking about what I want to sew. Specifically, I've been thinking about playsuits. I used to hate them (and I still hate the word rompers), but playsuits have grown on me.
I love the shape of this one from the 50s. The print is great too.

I have a couple of playsuit patterns. Well, technically, they're bathing suit patterns, but can you imagine swimming in something that is made of denim or cotton broadcloth? They're on the list of recommended fabrics for both these patterns.
I have some seersucker in my stash that will be perfect for a playsuit. Now, I just need to find some time to sew it.
Great post - I always used to loathe playsuits as well and think they are really not for me. But I've seen more and more playsuits around, I've begun to like them more and more.
ReplyDeleteI also used to think I was too big to wear them - but I've realised there's a lot of bigger girls that look rockin' in playsuits - so perhaps I could pull one off too!
Thanks. Yeah, I think it depends on the style of them. I used to hate them because the only ones I saw were really unflattering ones. I think there's a playsuit out there for all sizes. It's just finding the right shape.
DeleteI loooooove playsuits, but they are always too short for my liking :( If I could sew, I would definitely make one for myself like the top one!
ReplyDeleteYeah, the shortness can be a problem if that's not your style. The top one is my favourite too.
DeleteThese are wonderful, I like to wear them in the house. I like the patterns you have, you could wear those anywhere, so pretty :) x
ReplyDeleteWhen I make one I think I'll wear it in the house too. I don't know if I'll be brave enough to wear it out of the house.
DeleteSo cute. I made one a few years ago (well I was in my twenties so quite a few years ago) in purple with white polka dots in a lovely rayon. I love rayon for nearly everything but alas the only stuff I've seen here has been at spotlight and the uglies florals. Anyway good luck with uni and all the stuff you have to do. I have three things due and then 4 exams with the last one finishing on 13 Nov!! I'm feeling your pain! When I have NO time all I think about is sewing and when I do have time, I have so many other things that need doing that have been left all semester that I still don't get too much time to sew! Ah well!
ReplyDeleteTHat sounds great. I love polka dots. Rayon is great, especially the older stuff but you don't seem to be able to get it very easily these days. Thanks. Good luck to you for your exams and things due too.
DeleteI can totally see you rocking a onesie....as we like to call them here. I like them all but the slight camel toe in the second picture is worrying me a bit! I don't think I could ever wear one with confidence. It really looks best on the very slender girls....not me!
ReplyDeleteYeah, they get called that here sometimes too. I'm not sure I can wear one with confidence, but otherwise I'll just wear it around the house.
DeleteDefinitely make yourself a playsuit!! I once turned down a £40 50s one in a vintage shop because of the price, but it had a bullet bra shaped bodice. Weep. I'm also jealous of you being at Uni - enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI will. Aw, that sounds fabulous, pity it was so expensive. To be honest, I'm not enjoying uni. I've been there 5 years and I'm sick of it.
DeleteI love my playsuits but have a chose a suitable place to wear them, ie., never anywhere with a portaloo or an occasion when I get really drunk, an absolute nightmare! x
ReplyDeleteHa, yeah, I am a bit worried about where to wear one. That's why I might just make one and wear it around the house at first.
DeleteI love Vix comment, lol.
ReplyDeleteI cannot see myself wearing them, but I bet you look gorgeous.

Me too. It made me laugh. Thanks.
DeleteI haven't worn one since... ooh, the late 1980s/early 90s probably, but I love the examples you have shown us here. Hope you do make one, I'd love to see which design you choose! xxx
ReplyDeletei can't think about playsuits now, it's getting so cold here ... freezin'!

So, so , SO cute! I love them! I'm actually selling my 50s one on Trade Me right now. It makes me so sad to have to part with it but I'm way too tall and it tends to give me an errr wedgie!
ReplyDeleteYou must be on the same sewing wavelength as me ;-) It was only yesterday I was trawling Etsy and Ebay for some nice vintage playsuit patterns. I want a 40's one - I missed out on a well priced one too cos I faffed for too long over whether to buy it or not.
ReplyDeleteI like the ones that are separates and don't have the issues with going to the bathroom and whatnot - Maybe they're not technically playsuits - but the high waist and baring only the tiniest amount of midriff is pretty. I think if it's high - like at your underbust, they don't look trashy like some belly baring things can be.
I love playsuits (that word is dubious to me - do you play in them?)! Just like dresses, they're an entire outfit and make getting dressed in the morning a cinch!
ReplyDeleteI remember making a gorgeous long bell-bottomed jumpsuit in the seventies. It had a zip up the front with a ring-pull and a mandarin collar. I can't remember the exact fabric but I think it was a floral cotton or linen. I wish I had kept the pattern. It was out of fashion almost as soon as I made it!
