The Block Coffee Dress

Uni has been crazy busy lately so I haven't had time for much of anything. I was going to show you my finished Moonrise Kingdom inspired dress but then I, um...spilt food down the front of it so, it's now in the wash.

I finished another dress today with fabric from the Two Squirrels sale so, all is not lost. When I saw the print I knew that I needed to make it into a 60s style A-line dress. I drafted the bodice using the instructions for the basic bodice block by Gedwoods and the skirt is from the Coffee Date Dress by Elainemay, both on Burdastyle

Looking miserable because it was freezing

I only managed to get one photo because it was so cold. I know what you're thinking. Why did I make a completely seasonally inappropriate dress, then? Well, I was wearing it with a wool cardi and a thermal but I took them off for the photo. I often wear my summer dresses in winter with a couple of layers underneath/on top.

  1. I love this fabric! It's adorable - also I'm exactly the same as you, wear a lot of the same clothes in summer and winter, just layer like crazy for the winter months!

    1. Thanks. Yeah, I find it hard finding winter clothes I like so layering is great.

    1. Thanks. Yes, that's why I love winter because you can wear all the same clothes with cute coats, hats and gloves as well.

  4. Ah you are actually so talented! This is amazing. I recently bought some vintage fabrics on Trademe and I'm hoping that in my 5-week break from uni next month I will get a couple of dresses made, with your most recent set of posts as my inspiration. I am nowhere near smart enough (nor well enough equipped with spatial reasoning) to draft my own patterns so I've been lurking the vintage patterns section of good old Trademe too.

Also I am totally with you on the summer dresses with layers of wool thing. I actually only have 2 winter dresses (that is, ones with long sleeves that are made of velvet or wool) so my winter wardrobe consists of cotton dresses with merino thermals, woolen jerseys and lots of scarves and hats.

Also your hair is looking really awesome.

    1. Thanks. You get 5 weeks? Jealous. That sounds great. Trademe has some quite good vintage patterns. I've got a lot off there. Burdastyle has some free (although you have to print them out- I used to do it at uni) patterns some of which are vintage-esque.
Yes, I only have one proper winter dress too. They are way harder to find than summer dresses. Merino thermals under cotton dresses is pretty much what I live in in winter.
Thanks, I dyed it black again. It looks better black but I get lazy about dying it every 6 weeks.

  6. Very cute! I just bought the coolest fabric from Spotlight today. It has vintage pattern covers all over it. It's so cute! I bought some to make a fun novelty print dress. The fabric reminded me of you though so I thought you might want to check your local Spotlight and see if you can find it.

    1. Thanks! That fabric sounds amazing. I'll have to go to Spotlight and see if they have any here. I look forward to seeing the dress you make out of it.

  7. That's lovely, you're on a real roll with the dressmaking lately, you put me and my partially started frock to shame, lol. Wearing summer dresses with cardigans and tights has to be done, we'd never get any of our dresses worn here if we didn't do that! Xx

    1. Thanks. I try and do 30 minutes a day of sewing. I read about it somewhere and it means you get things done really fast. I also have trouble finding winter clothes so I have to wear my summer ones.

  8. The fabric is just adorable. I love the dress. I wish I could make my own clothes with such ease!

    1. Thanks! You wouldn't think I was making them with 'ease' if you saw me swearing in frustration and throwing my sewing on the floor when I do something wrong.

  9. Oh so cute. I had a dress just like that with so similar print except the blue was a lime green - it was a hand me down from my sister and so threadbare that my mother threw it out and when I found out I went back into the rag bag and got it out! Thank you for the memory!

Thanks. I've only drafted a bodice block. I can't be bothered with all the other ones either. It's all too hard. Patterns are so much better.
I will probably wear it for every occasion.

  19. I love the shape of this dress--you did a nice job of Frankpatterning with this. I'm the same way about layering summer clothes in winter. Our summer is much longer than our winter here, so having a huge separate wardrobe for winter just doesn't make much sense.

    1. Thanks! Me too. I think I'll have to make a few more of this type of shape. That makes sense.
