Lemon Tart

Vintage McCalls 5458 shorts

These are the "real" version of the shorts I showed you in my last post. The fabric is a drill cotton with lemons on it from (where else?) the kids section at Spotlight. I wanted the lemons to run across the shorts sideways so I cut the fabric on the crosswise grain rather than parallel to the selvedge.

I forgot to mention the best part in my last post. There's a pocket! I love pockets.

I accidentally made this pair a smidgen too big. I cut the waistband extra long because in the last pair I had to do it in two pieces as I didn't have enough fabric. I can't be bothered unpicking the waistband to take them in though.

You can kind of see the buttons up the side. They're plain white ones from my favourite button op shop. Buttons are pretty much the only thing I ever find there, but they always have a good selection.

I wore these and the other shorts while I was in Wellington and I have to say, I'm a bit of a shorts convert. They were pretty comfy for walking around in and I didn't have to worry about flashing my knickers because of the wind.

    1. Thanks so much! I can't take credit for the hair. I just leave it and it does its own thing. Lemon prints are fantastic.

  2. Ah,major shorts envy going on here on my part. can't wait for summer to come so i can make one of these. I love the brightness of the colour. It does not really look as big as you think. Then again, looking at the last picture, I think it depends on how you stand.

    1. Isn't it funny? I can't wait for winter to come so I can make some trousers. They aren't that big, the waistband just gapes a bit so I wear a belt and it's not that noticeable.

  3. How excellent! The shorts look loose by design more than they look too big, I think, and either way I am too excited about the lemon fabric to particularly notice?

    1. Thanks! Yeah, they're meant to be a bit baggy. The waistband is a little big that's all. I get the lemon fabric excitment thing. When I saw it in the shop I got excited and knew I had to make something with it.

    1. Thanks. Spotlight has some great fabric in the kids section which is, in my opinion, wasted on children, because they don't really appreciate the sheer awesomeness of fabric with lemons on it.

  7. Nice work, these look really great on you. I love the idea of shorts with tights and sneakers/flats but I always think it looks silly on me. Maybe one day I will be braver! Also, isn't spotlight's kids section the BEST place for cheap and cute fabric? I love it:)

    1. Thanks. I wasn't really sure what to wear with them at first so I googled outfit pictures of girls in shorts and found ones I liked and sort of copied them. I think sometimes once you get used to wearing something you stop feeling silly. It really is the best. I love that they have lots of 100% cotton fabric in the kids section.

  10. Mother likes your shoes. I like your shorts. They are not a lemon.

    1. Tell Mother I said thanks. I got the shoes in Wellington. Thank you. I don't understand why a 'lemon' refers to something defective when lemons are so yummy and look nice when printed on shorts.
